Comprehensive Eye Test

All our eye tests are carried out by certified Optometrists using advanced diagnostic equipment. Our eye exam includes a series of tests to evaluate your eyesight and eye health.

Children's Vision

An eye examination is important for children of all ages. Even kids who cannot name the letters of the alphabet are able to have their eyes tested. We make the pediatric eye care of our little community members as interesting as possible.

Certified Safety Eyewear

Occupational hazards at workplaces could cause serious damage to the vision. We can provide certified prescription safety glasses with a compliance standard for vision impact protection.

Specialised Vision Assessment

We are qualified to complete the Police, Armed Forces vision assessments and drivers licence screenings. We are a preferred supplier for the Ministry of Social Development.

Dry Eye Clinic

Approximately 20% of the adult population suffer from dry eyes. Our Optometrists are experts at analysing your dry eye symptoms and recommending the best treatment options to reduce your discomfort.

Eyewear & Contact Lenses

As an independent optometry practice, we source our eyewear and contact lenses from reputable designers around the world, including Italy and France. We can help you choose the frames that best fit your lifestyle and personal style.

G&D's EXPERT TEAM

Jenny Stewart

B.Optom, Cert. Oc. Pharm

Growing up in on a farm in Puketitiri, Hawke's Bay, Jenny got her first pair of glasses at the age of 12.  And voilà! The glasses allowed her to see the sheep in the paddocks above their house.

Jenny attended the University of Auckland and graduated with a Bachelor of Optometry in 2000 and returned to Hawke's Bay to practise Optometry.  She gained her Therapeutic optometry qualification in 2004.

She then bought Grant & Douglas from Hugh Douglas in 2006 and continues to enjoy all aspects of being an Optometrist. Jenny has a particular passion for helping people with dry eyes and children's vision.

In her spare time, she likes to walk with her dog Pepi, spend time with family and embrace her creative side, sewing and crafting.

Ross Hardey

Dip.Opt.

Victoria Cooney

B.Optom (Hons)

Ross studied and trained in Auckland and London.  He spent 40 years with three Optometry practices on the West Coast and started one of the first dry eye clinics in New Zealand. He is very passionate about the fashion eyewear industry and is working towards offering high-fashion eyewear at Grant & Douglas' Havelock North Clinic.

Originally from Dunedin, Ross attended the University of Auckland and graduated in Optometry in 1977. He then practised in Christchurch for two years before going overseas for a further three years to train and practise in England. Although he came back to New Zealand with an intention to work here only for a short period, Ross & his wife Raey quickly fell in love with the natural landscape and dramatic west coast beaches near Wanganui. So, they made it their home and raised three children in Wanganui.

Ross and Raey moved to Hawke’s Bay in 2020, joined Grant & Douglas and bought a house in Havelock North to live near their adult children and grandchildren. In his spare time, Ross likes golfing and spending time with family.

Victoria has been a part of the Grant & Douglas team since 2012. Born and raised in Lower Hutt, she graduated from the University of Auckland in 2011. Victoria spent a year working in Invercargill before moving north to be closer to friends and family. She says she didn't intend to settle in Hawke's Bay, but now she loves it here - especially the sunny weather and laid-back lifestyle.

It was her Optometrist that she saw yearly throughout her teenage years who encouraged her into the Optometry profession, and she feels lucky to have found a job that she genuinely enjoys. Her favourite aspects of the job are building relationships with her patients and problem solving to find solutions to her patients' concerns.

Outside of work, she is kept busy with her two young children, enjoys spending time outdoors and baking in her spare time.

HAPPY EYES, HAPPY US

Theresa

Our 3-year-old had a blast with his eye exam! I appreciated how personalised Jenny made the exam and even included his favourite superhero references throughout the exam to keep him engaged!
