Smart Glasses, Clear Vision: The New Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3)

Smart glasses have quietly gone from novelty to normal. The third generation of Ray-Ban Meta glasses was unveiled at Meta Connect in late September 2026, and it’s the most wearable version yet: slimmer frames, more styles, and a battery that lasts longer.

At Grant & Douglas Optometry & Eyewear, we’ve been Havelock North’s independent optometrists since 2006, and we’ve always kept an eye on where eyewear is heading. Here’s what’s new, and what to think about before you buy a pair.

What’s new in Gen 3

The headline change is choice. Smart glasses used to mean one look, the dark Wayfarer. Gen 3 comes in three frame styles:

  • Wayfarer: the classic, refreshed
  • Aviator: the timeless pilot shape, new to the range
  • Zena: a bold new cat-eye frame

Under the hood, the upgrades are practical rather than flashy:

Smart glasses still need to be good glasses

It’s easy to focus on the tech and forget the basics. If you wear your Ray-Ban Metas all day, the lenses matter just as much as the camera.

  • Prescription lenses: The Grant & Douglas team can fit Gen 3 frames with your prescription lenses, so you don’t have to choose between seeing clearly and staying connected.
  • Transitions® options: Light-adaptive lenses darken outdoors and clear indoors. That suits Hawke’s Bay’s bright, high-UV days.
  • UV protection: Sunglass versions should block 100% of UV. Your eyes need protecting whether your glasses are smart or not.
  • A proper fit: The new adjustable temple tips help, but frames still need setting up by someone who knows how. A good fit keeps lenses centred on your eyes and stops slipping.

If it’s been more than two years since your last eye exam, book in with Grant & Douglas before you order. Your prescription may have changed.

Are they right for you?

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 glasses suit people who want their hands free: cyclists, walkers, parents capturing moments with the kids, and anyone who takes a lot of calls on the move.

A few things to weigh up:

  • Privacy: The glasses have a built-in camera with an indicator light. Be mindful of others when recording, especially in shops, schools and medical settings.
  • Battery: Nine hours is a full day for most people, but heavy music or video use will drain it faster.
  • Screen time: Hands-free doesn’t mean eye-strain free. If you use them alongside phones and computers, keep up regular breaks. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Upgrading from Gen 2: The changes are useful but modest. If your current pair works well, there’s no rush.
