August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month Is it Time to Book an Eye Test?

August is the perfect time to focus on your child’s vision—just before the final school term kicks off. Vision plays a crucial role in a child’s learning and development, yet many vision issues go unnoticed because kids don’t realise their sight is impaired.
Did you know?
Up to 80% of learning is visual.
Children often can’t articulate vision issues—they simply adapt.
Undiagnosed eyesight problems can affect reading, coordination, confidence, and concentration.
That’s why Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month is the ideal reminder for parents and caregivers to get their child’s eyes tested.
Common signs of vision issues in children:
Squinting or closing one eye
Holding books or devices very close
Frequent headaches
Avoiding reading or struggling with schoolwork
Eye rubbing or complaining of tired eyes
What to expect during a kids’ eye exam:
A child-friendly, relaxed environment
Age-appropriate tests to assess vision, eye coordination, and general eye health
Early detection of conditions like myopia (short-sightedness), lazy eye (amblyopia), or astigmatism
Subsidy available: Many families are eligible for the Enable Spectacle Subsidy to help cover the cost of prescription glasses.
Let’s give our tamariki the best chance to thrive at school and beyond—book an eye exam this August and make eye health a priority.
