The History of Grant & Douglas Optometrists

The story begins with Alan Grant Senior, who bought Woodward Pharmacy in Heretaunga Street two to three years before the great Hawke’s Bay earthquake of 1931. The building was flattened in the quake and had to be rebuilt from the ground up.

His son, Alan Grant Junior, began training as an optician in Palmerston North in 1949, continuing his studies in Wellington from 1950 to 1951. He was offered a position in Masterton before his final examination results had even come through, encouraged to accept by his boss, who clearly had no doubt he’d pass. After two years in Masterton, Alan returned home to establish Grant’s Opticians in a room above the pharmacy, around 1954. The practice has operated from three different premises since then. Alan Grant Junior retired in 1993.

Hugh Douglas joined Alan in partnership during the 1970s or early 1980s, and bought Alan’s share of the business when Alan retired in 1993. In 2001, when Visique first launched, the practice became a Visique Group member. At that time it was operating from 221W Heretaunga Street, the original site of Woodward Pharmacy, with satellite practices in Village Court in Havelock North and on the main street of Waipukurau.

In 2006, Jenny Stewart purchased the Hastings and Havelock North branches from Hugh Douglas, together with business partners. The Waipukurau branch was sold separately. In 2010 the Havelock North practice moved from Village Court up to the Joll Road premises. In 2012 the Hastings practice was renovated.

In April 2014, both practices became independent under the name Grant & Douglas Optometry & Eyewear. Jenny became the sole owner in 2019, and in 2020 the Havelock North practice was renovated and enlarged while the Hastings practice was closed.
